Harmony Public Schools created an academic literacy plan based on research-based practices and college and career readiness skills. The plan supports Harmony’s mission of preparing students for college with a strong focus on STEM education and its core value of “STEM for All.” Our academic literacy approach not only creates a school-wide effort to improving instructional practices coherently, but it also supports students in developing literacy skills to be prepared for the demands of college and workforce. Harmony’s academic literacy plan focuses on the following components:
- data-driven decisions through systematic use of dashboards, smart analytics, and collaborative data meetings to help teachers make the best decisions to improve students’ academic literacy
- professional learning communities, coaching cycles, and other high-impact PD to support teachers in addressing student needs and reaching desired outcomes
- blended learning environments to personalize literacy instruction thru independent reading, adaptive software use, and project based learning activities that lead to targeted RtI strategies to support student goal attainment
