Saturday, February 24, 135 girls from Endeavor, Excellence, Technology, Enrichment, Achievement, Katy Innovation, Houston Art, and Beaumont Academy participated in the annual Girl Day STEM Festival at UT Austin. Most Houston area campuses are utilizing Engineering or Computer Science based curriculum for Gifted and Talented services, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about the engineering program at UT-Austin. There were activities for grades K-8 and the girls saw many activities that mirrored what we are working on during our Gifted and Talented classes. Students were able to speak with current engineering students at UT Austin in addition to Engineers from companies and organizations including BASF Corporation, BAE Systems, ChickTech Austin, and KLRU-TV Austin PBS. “It’s a fact that girls are underrepresented in engineering programs across the country and in all engineering fields. We as a GATE community wanted to take the opportunity to inspire and motivate our students during a period when their interest and passion for engineering is just beginning to grow, in hopes that our girls will continue to pursue engineering despite the obstacles they might face in the future”, said GATE Coach Ms. Bottomly.
