Fifteen students from Harmony School of Innovation will be FAA-certified drone pilots by the end of the school year after taking the only high school drone certification class in the borderland. Principal Riza Gurlek and journalism teacher Joshua Gandara brought the class to the school after learning of similar programs in other parts of the state. Currently, Harmony is the only school in El Paso offering the certification classes. The fifteen students will have to pass an FAA test to become certified. Once they are certified, they will be able to fly drones commercially and can partner with federal agencies such as the FBI and DEA. The test will be administered near the end of the school year, said Campus Outreach Coordinator Lorena Chavira. Thanks to visionary Harmony educators for bringing this unique opportunity to El Paso and helping to bridge a critical talent shortage in this part of STEM industry.
