Samantha Schleder, fourth-grade teacher at Harmony Science Academy in Houston, was one of only six teachers in Texas chosen by NASA to participate in the July program, Train-the-Trainers Institute by the Texas Girls Collaborative Project. The teachers will go to Johnson Space Center and learn how to better teach and engage elementary students in STEM subjects through activities that align with NASA’s missions and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). They will focus on areas shown to be the most difficult for students to grasp, such as force, motion and energy, and Earth and space. Teachers will also receive subject matter presentations from NASA engineers and scientists and tour NASA facilities. Teachers will leave the program equipped to teach other educators how to better engage their elementary students in STEM.
