GEMS is an AEOP program that provides middle and high school students with opportunity to further their knowledge in the fields of mathematics and science. Students have the opportunity to work alongside high school and college-aged mentors, and senior Army scientists and engineers. GEMS is driven by the concept of engaging students who might not be considering a STEM career. “If I had to summarize GEMS I would say it’s interactive, educative, unique, and very fun”, said Justin Mascorro, 7th grade student at Harmony Science Academy – San Antonio. 10th grade student Lauren Borrego shared the same sentiment “my time at GEMS was one of the most educational moments I’ve had in my life.” Students work on experiments that teach them about eyes, brain, muscles among other body parts. Students were especially excited about the opportunity to learn without relying on a textbook. A field trip to the Center of Intrepid, really helped participants learn about the impact that science can have on amputees. Thanks to Harmony educators in San Antonio for connecting their middle and high school students to this one of a kind summer STEM camp.
